The Story Behind the Garden

Jacques Majorelle’s Vision

French Orientalist painter Jacques Majorelle first visited Marrakech in 1917, seeking relief from a heart condition. Enchanted by the city’s light and colors, he bought land in the Guéliz district and spent 40 years creating his botanical masterpiece.

In 1937, Majorelle introduced his signature shade — now known worldwide as “Majorelle Blue” — painting the Art Deco studio and garden structures in this striking cobalt color. The garden opened to the public in 1947.

Yves Saint Laurent’s Legacy

After Majorelle’s death in 1962, the garden fell into disrepair. In 1980, fashion legends Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé purchased and meticulously restored it. YSL called it “an endless source of inspiration” and had his ashes scattered in the garden after his death in 2008.

A Roman column memorial marks where Yves Saint Laurent’s ashes were scattered. It’s become a pilgrimage site for fashion enthusiasts worldwide.
