Marrakech to Ouarzazate is a road journey of roughly 200 km through the High Atlas. Allow around four to five hours for a straightforward crossing in ordinary conditions, with extra time for hotel transfers, meals and sightseeing. Take a scheduled coach if your main aim is to reach Ouarzazate. Choose a driver, rental car or suitable excursion if you want to visit Aït Benhaddou along the way.
A same-day return is possible, but it means crossing the mountains twice. Staying overnight makes more sense if you want time in Ouarzazate itself or plan to continue toward the southern valleys.
The important distinction is between getting to the city and exploring the route. A bus ticket, a private transfer and a sightseeing day trip deliver different experiences, even when they connect the same places.
Choosing how to travel from Marrakech to Ouarzazate
Start with what you need the journey to do:
- For a direct journey to your accommodation: compare scheduled coaches with a private transfer.
- For Aït Benhaddou before reaching Ouarzazate: arrange a sightseeing transfer or drive yourself.
- For a return to Marrakech that evening: choose a focused day excursion and accept substantial road time.
- For a longer southern itinerary: stay in Ouarzazate and continue onward, rather than returning north immediately.
Your accommodation, luggage and onward plans matter as much as the ticket price. A couple staying in central Ouarzazate has different needs from a family heading to an outlying guesthouse.
When choosing how to travel between cities in Morocco, match each stage to your luggage and overnight plan. On this route, the mountain crossing is what shapes the day.
The N9 route through the High Atlas

The usual route follows the N9 southeast from Marrakech, crosses the High Atlas through Tizi n’Tichka and descends toward Ouarzazate. The pass reaches approximately 2,260 metres.
Although the distance is modest compared with a long motorway journey, the road includes bends, climbs, settlements and slower vehicles. You should not estimate the travel time simply by dividing the kilometres by a motorway speed.
Four to five hours is a useful starting allowance for a relatively direct journey. Visiting Aït Benhaddou, stopping for lunch and taking photographs can turn the crossing into much of the day.
Why journey estimates differ
A route planner may measure the drive between two central map pins. Your actual journey can also include:
- Getting from a medina riad to a vehicle-accessible pickup point.
- Collecting other passengers on a group departure.
- Reaching the coach terminal before boarding.
- Rest stops and time spent visiting a site.
- The final drive from the arrival stop to your accommodation.
Ask what a quoted duration includes. A driving estimate does not necessarily cover a walk through Aït Benhaddou or a film-studio visit.
Do the same for your destination. A hotel in Ouarzazate, a guesthouse near Aït Benhaddou and accommodation around Skoura require different drop-offs.
Taking a bus from Marrakech to Ouarzazate
CTM and Supratours are the main scheduled operators to compare. A coach suits travelers who can work around the timetable and prefer to arrange accommodation and sightseeing separately.
Search the exact direction and departure day through CTM’s official booking system or Supratours. Check the arrival time as well as the fare, particularly if you have a hotel check-in deadline or a connection afterward.
For scale, a CTM route listing shows a journey of four hours and 45 minutes and a fare from 115 MAD per adult. That is an indicative listing, not a guaranteed price or standing timetable for every departure.
Find the correct boarding point
Use the terminal or boarding location on your ticket and booking confirmation. Do not assume that every bus company leaves from the same station, or rely on an old travel blog’s directions.
CTM’s agency directory identifies its Ouarzazate location on Avenue Mohammed V. Your chosen service’s confirmation should still establish where you board and arrive.
Leave enough time to get from your Marrakech accommodation to the terminal, especially with hold luggage. Keep the ticket and the address available offline so that you can show them to a taxi driver.
A coach journey does not include sightseeing stops
A scheduled service transports passengers along its route. It does not wait while you walk through Aït Benhaddou.
If visiting the ksar is essential, either choose transport that includes the visit or stay in Ouarzazate and arrange a separate excursion. Avoid getting off at an unfamiliar roadside point with luggage unless you have confirmed the stop and onward collection.
That distinction can change the apparent saving. A cheap bus ticket followed by a separate private excursion may cost more than you expected, although it can still give you a more flexible overall stay.
Work out the full bus budget
At an example fare of 115 MAD, two adults would pay 230 MAD for the outbound tickets. If the same rate applied in the opposite direction, the four tickets together would cost 460 MAD.
Add baggage charges where applicable, transport to the Marrakech terminal and the ride to your Ouarzazate accommodation. Meals and local sightseeing remain separate.
As with other long-distance bus journeys in Morocco, check the baggage allowance and booking conditions before paying. For this route, also consider how comfortable you are spending several hours on a winding mountain road.
Arranging a private transfer with a driver
A private transfer is useful when you have several bags, need a specific collection time or want to travel directly to accommodation outside the city centre.
Describe the journey accurately when requesting a quote. “Marrakech to Ouarzazate” could mean a direct transfer, a transfer with a short lunch break or a full day with visits along the way.
A written request should include:
- Your Marrakech pickup address, or flight details if collecting at the airport.
- Your final accommodation and its map location.
- The number of passengers, bags and any child-seat requirements.
- Whether you want to visit Aït Benhaddou or another place.
- The expected waiting time and any planned onward stop.
Ask for a price for the whole vehicle and the stated itinerary. Establish whether extra waiting, parking, entrance tickets or a local site guide cost more.
A sightseeing transfer needs a sightseeing schedule
If the driver is taking you to Aït Benhaddou, allow time to park, walk to the settlement, explore and return to the vehicle. A brief viewpoint stop is a different service from a guided visit.
Choose one or two priorities instead of assuming that every attraction named on a map can fit before hotel check-in. The advantage of a private journey is the ability to agree on the pace.
Your driver may provide useful local context, but driving services and guiding inside monuments are separate arrangements. Confirm what you are buying without assuming one includes the other.
Can you use a grand taxi
A grand taxi may be an option through the appropriate intercity taxi rank or by arranging an exclusive vehicle. Availability, departure arrangements and fares should be established locally.
For a shared ride, ask where the vehicle leaves, whether it waits for passengers to fill the seats and how luggage is handled. The time before departure can matter if you have a firm arrival deadline.
For an exclusive hire, agree on the whole-vehicle fare, drop-off location and any waiting or visits before setting off. Paying for the vehicle does not automatically provide a sightseeing itinerary.
A city petit taxi is a different service from an intercity grand taxi. The distinction between petit taxis and grand taxis in Morocco helps avoid confusion when arranging the ride.
Driving a rental car across Tizi n’Tichka
Self-driving can suit travelers who are comfortable on mountain roads and want a vehicle for later stages around Ouarzazate.
The main N9 route is paved. A 4×4 is not generally necessary simply to travel between the two cities, although side roads, weather and your accommodation’s approach can change the requirements.
Collect the car early enough to inspect it and understand the controls before beginning the mountain stage. Check the rental terms, insurance, fuel policy and permitted return location.
Make the route fit your driving confidence
Travel in daylight where possible. Allow for bends, slow traffic and breaks, and use proper stopping places for photographs.
If you are unfamiliar with mountain driving, a driver or coach may be the more comfortable choice. A good view does not remove the concentration needed behind the wheel.
For the budget, include the rental period, fuel, parking, insurance options and any one-way return charge. A car used for one transfer can become expensive if it must be kept for additional days or returned in another city.
Keep the deposit separate from the amount you expect to spend. It affects how much money or card capacity you need available, but it is not automatically a consumed trip cost.
Adding Aït Benhaddou to the journey

Aït Benhaddou is a separate settlement roughly 30 km from Ouarzazate. It is reached by a detour from the main road and should be treated as a visit in its own right.
Allow enough time for exploring Aït Benhaddou, photographs and a break. The lanes and higher viewpoints involve uneven ground and climbing, so the time you need depends on mobility, temperature and how far you want to explore.
If you are staying in Ouarzazate, visiting on the journey from Marrakech can avoid a separate return excursion. If you arrive by coach, visiting later from the city is often easier to organize.
Telouet and the Ounila Valley need extra planning
An itinerary through Telouet and the Ounila Valley is different from a direct N9 transfer. It can add local roads, visits and more time away from the main route.
Agree on it before departure and confirm current road access and the status of any intended interior visit. Do not assume that seeing the outside of a kasbah means all of it is open.
If you are also trying to fit in Aït Benhaddou, a studio visit and a return to Marrakech, decide what matters most. An overnight gives you more freedom to spread those visits out.
Is a day trip from Marrakech worth the road time
A day trip can work if you have limited time, want to cross the Atlas and are happy with selected visits followed by a return to Marrakech. Expect a long excursion, often around 10 to 12 hours overall, with timing affected by conditions and stops.
It is less suitable if you want an extended studio visit, a slow walk through Aït Benhaddou, substantial time in Ouarzazate and several other stops. The road journey takes a large share of the available day.
Visit Morocco Together’s Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate day trip from Marrakech is listed from €139 per person for a 10–12-hour experience. Two adults would therefore start at €278 at that rate. Confirm the pickup point, the visits covered and whether entrance fees and guiding are included in your selected booking; a return excursion is different from a one-way hotel transfer.
Keep your luggage plans clear
A day excursion normally assumes you return with the group. If you intend to stay in Ouarzazate, arrange that before booking rather than simply leaving the tour halfway through.
Confirm whether the operator accepts a different end point, where the vehicle can drop you and whether it can carry your suitcases. A day bag and full holiday luggage take different amounts of space.
The same applies if you want to join a later departure or continue to another city. The operator needs to plan the vehicle and schedule around the agreed journey.
Staying overnight in Ouarzazate
An overnight separates the Atlas crossing from your return or onward travel. It also leaves room to enjoy the evening after arriving.
One night can work as a stop on a longer route, but it does not necessarily provide a full sightseeing day. If you arrive after visiting Aït Benhaddou and depart early the next morning, your time in Ouarzazate itself will be short.
Two nights give you a full day between travel stages. That can suit an interest in film studios, kasbahs or nearby landscapes.
After you have reached the city, Visit Morocco Together’s two-day Ouarzazate and Aït Benhaddou tour offers a regional itinerary with an accommodation night, transport and a driver-guide, listed from €249 per person. It starts in Ouarzazate, so your journey from Marrakech is separate. Check the overnight location, meals and any entrance fees before combining it with your hotel bookings.
Choose accommodation for your arrival

Check the address rather than relying on “Ouarzazate” in a property’s name. Accommodation near Aït Benhaddou or outside the city can require another road transfer.
For a short stay without a car, consider how you will reach dinner and the next day’s meeting point. For an early onward departure, confirm reception hours and whether breakfast can fit your plans.
Film studios, Taourirt Kasbah and nearby excursions give you several ways to spend time in the Ouarzazate area. Choose the visits you want before deciding whether one night is enough.
Three ways to organize this stage
Direct travel and a city stay
Take a coach or direct transfer from Marrakech, settle into your accommodation and keep the remainder of the day light. Use a separate day for visits if your schedule allows.
This suits travelers who want clear transport arrangements and do not need sightseeing on the journey.
Aït Benhaddou followed by an overnight
Leave Marrakech in the morning with transport that allows the visit. Cross the Atlas, stop for a meal and explore Aït Benhaddou before continuing to your accommodation.
Decide whether to return the following day or keep a full day in Ouarzazate before traveling again. This avoids counting an overnight as though it were a full visit.
Ouarzazate as part of a southern route
Continue east toward Skoura and the Dadès and Todra areas, or head south toward Agdz and the Draa Valley. Those are different directions, so choose your next overnight before arranging transport.
Ouarzazate is a gateway to southern routes, but the major Sahara dune areas are still a substantial journey away. They require different onward routes and camp arrival arrangements, so choose your destination before booking the next stage.
Weather and comfort on the crossing
Check conditions along the mountain route as well as the forecast in Marrakech and Ouarzazate. Snow, heavy rain, poor visibility or road restrictions can affect the crossing even when the weather in one of the cities seems pleasant.
Ask your operator about the plan if the road is disrupted. Do not assume that a longer detour will preserve the same arrival time or allow every scheduled visit.
Carry a layer for mountain stops, drinking water and accessible essentials. If winding roads tend to make you uncomfortable, allow for breaks when choosing your transport and avoid packing the day with additional driving.
With children, confirm appropriate seating before the journey. For mobility needs, discuss both the vehicle and the walking involved at any stop; an accessible drop-off does not establish access throughout an old settlement.
Returning to Marrakech or connecting to a flight
Book the return direction around the time you actually want to leave Ouarzazate. A convenient outbound coach does not establish that the return schedule will suit your plans.
Allow a buffer before an important flight. Returning across the Atlas and immediately checking in for an international departure leaves little room for traffic or weather delays.
There is no passenger train between Marrakech and Ouarzazate. Ouarzazate has an airport, code OZZ, but an airport or airline route page does not prove a nonstop flight operates on your dates. If considering flying, compare the actual itinerary, any connection and airport transfers with the road journey.
For most visitors already in Marrakech, the main choice remains how to cross the Atlas and how much time to spend along the way.
Questions about traveling from Marrakech to Ouarzazate
How long does the journey take
Allow around four to five hours for a relatively direct road journey in ordinary conditions. Substantial sightseeing and meal stops can make it most of a day. Use the operator’s timetable for a particular coach departure.
Can you visit Ouarzazate on a day trip
Yes, but a return excursion involves significant driving. Choose a limited set of visits, and stay overnight if you want more time in the city or surrounding area.
Does the bus stop for an Aït Benhaddou visit
A scheduled coach does not provide time for a sightseeing visit. Arrange a separate excursion from Ouarzazate or choose a journey specifically designed to include the ksar.
Do you need a 4×4
Not generally for the paved N9 between the cities. Check the requirements if your accommodation or itinerary involves tracks away from the main road.
Can you travel directly from Marrakech Airport
A pre-arranged vehicle can start at the airport, with the flight details and waiting arrangements agreed in advance. Consider arrival time and fatigue before beginning a mountain journey after a flight.
Is Ouarzazate in the Sahara dunes
Ouarzazate provides access to southern Morocco, but it is not at the large dunes of Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga. Each requires a further journey and its own arrival arrangements.
