World Cup 2030 Fes planning starts with two places: your accommodation and the stadium entrance assigned to your match. A riad in Fes el-Bali can put workshops, historic lanes and courtyard dining within walking reach. A hotel in Ville Nouvelle can make vehicle collection and a railway departure simpler. Either can work for football, provided you plan the journey between them and the ground.

Fes, also written Fez or Fès, offers a different setting from Morocco’s coastal host cities. Your free days can revolve around architecture, food, artisan quarters and the imperial cities nearby. Matchday needs its own schedule, especially when your hotel door lies beyond the point a vehicle can reach.

This guide covers the city’s football background, the stadium, five accommodation options, restaurants, shopping, medical facilities, fitness and flexible itineraries. For the wider tournament route, start with our World Cup 2030 Morocco travel guide.

Planning information reviewed on 13 October 2026. Accommodation and local facilities are shortlists for comparison; 2030 availability, prices and operating arrangements require confirmation for your dates.

World Cup 2030 Fes and What to Confirm Before Booking

Miniature map showing Fes’s historic districts, Ville Nouvelle, Fes-Ville station, airport and Complexe Sportif de Fès

Morocco is a co-host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal. Fes appears in SONARGES’s stadium preparation programme through the Complexe Sportif de Fès. The host-country decision and a city’s preparation programme do not tell you which national teams will play there, your ticket category or the entrance you should use.

Follow the official FIFA World Cup 2030 information for tournament announcements. Before turning a shortlist into a booking, check the actual fixture, its city, the match date, ticket conditions and the venue named by the organiser.

The practical sequence is:

  1. Establish which match you want to attend and whether you have a valid ticket.
  2. Check the stadium and local match time.
  3. Choose accommodation around your arrival, return journey and free days.
  4. Compare cancellation terms for hotels and onward transport.
  5. Add sightseeing and regional trips around the football commitment.

A stadium renovation announcement is useful context. It is not a ticket release, a confirmed fan-zone location or a promise that a hotel will operate a matchday shuttle. Keep those decisions attached to the organisation responsible for them.

If your team’s next round could be in another city, consider the cost of changing the route. An extra night in Fes may be more manageable than a late stadium exit followed by an immediate departure, but the choice depends on the published schedule and your ticket arrangements.

Understanding Fes Before Choosing a Base

Fes developed as an early Islamic city and became an important political and cultural centre under the Marinids in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Its madrasas, courtyard houses, fountains and commercial buildings help explain why a city walk offers more than a collection of photo stops.

The historic medina is UNESCO-listed. Its significance includes the continuing relationship between buildings, craft skills and everyday urban life. Shops, homes, worship and deliveries share the lanes, so allow room for residents and working animals, and ask before photographing people at work.

Three names help orient your visit:

  • Fes el-Bali: the old medina, with much of the sightseeing and many riads reached through pedestrian lanes.
  • Fes el-Jdid: the later historic quarter associated with the royal enclosure and Mellah.
  • Ville Nouvelle: the modern city, with hotels, broader roads and the Fes-Ville railway station.

Fes el-Jdid means a historic “new” city; it is not another name for Ville Nouvelle. This distinction matters when checking an accommodation description or giving an address to a driver.

Choose one arrival gate or roadside meeting point for your medina stay and learn the final walk in daylight. A map pin for the riad’s courtyard may be accurate for walking while being unsuitable for vehicle navigation. Save both locations and the property’s contact details.

For a group, share the same spelling and saved pin. “Near the medina” is too broad to organise collection after a match, especially if people leave their rooms separately.

The Fes Stadium and Its Football Background

Visitors approaching the Complexe Sportif de Fès in Fes, Morocco

Recognising the correct venue

The World Cup preparation venue is the Complexe Sportif de Fès, also described as Fes Stadium or Grand Stade de Fès. CAF identifies its location along the road connecting Fes and Sefrou. It is separate from the medina and from Stade Hassan II, another name you may encounter while researching football in the city.

The stadium’s history includes its opening in 2007 and use for major domestic and international football. It forms part of the infrastructure being prepared for 2030. Earlier configurations and proposed redevelopment figures should not be treated as interchangeable descriptions of the finished tournament ground.

For a visitor, the more useful information is the stadium address, ticketed entrance, transport perimeter and permitted pedestrian approach. A seat count does not establish any of these.

Confirm the venue again when your ticket and match information arrive. Use the organiser’s exact stadium name when asking your hotel or driver about the journey. If an online listing shows a club fixture at a different Fes ground, do not assume it gives the location of your World Cup match.

Maghreb de Fès and Wydad de Fès

The city’s two historic football names are Maghreb Association Sportive de Fès, commonly MAS or Maghreb de Fès, and Wydad Athlétique de Fès, commonly WAF or Wydad de Fès. CAF dates their establishment to 1946 and 1948 respectively.

Both belong to Fes’s local football story. Wydad de Fès should not be confused with Wydad Athletic Club of Casablanca. Searching only “Wydad” can return the wrong club, ground or fixture.

Domestic league games, Throne Cup ties and national-team matches have their own calendars and ticket arrangements. A World Cup visit does not establish that a local club will also have a home match during your stay.

Our football clubs and stadiums in Morocco city guide provides the wider club context. Use official fixture information for any additional match, including the actual ground rather than the club’s usual home venue.

Where to Stay in Fes for Football

The useful accommodation question is how you want to spend the whole visit. Someone attending one match with two medina days has different needs from a supporter arriving by train, attending an evening fixture and leaving the following morning.

AreaWhy consider itWhat to check for football
Fes el-BaliHistoric surroundings and walking access to medina visitsVehicle meeting point, final walk, steps and late entry
Batha and the western medina approachA heritage stay with a recognisable edge-of-medina referenceExact property access and any event restrictions on collection
Ville NouvelleStreet-address hotels and modern-city servicesFull stadium route, return collection and room location
Fes-Ville station areaArrival and onward rail planningStation access, luggage storage and departure flexibility
Dhar El Mehraz and other hotel locations outside the lanesA hotel base with a different setting from the medinaActual access road, evening transport and distance to your activities

An edge-of-medina location can be a useful compromise, but confirm the exact building. A district label is not evidence that a minibus can stop at its door.

Five accommodation options to compare

These properties offer different starting points. They are not described here as tournament-appointed hotels, and their present facilities do not establish room availability in 2030.

PropertyLocation and reason to consider itQuestion before reserving
ibis FesAvenue des Almohades, Place de la Gare; a station-area hotel for a rail itineraryCan you store luggage and check in late if arrival or football runs behind schedule?
Barceló Fès MedinaA central-city hotel alternative to a riad in the lanesWhere can your vehicle collect the group, and what are the rate’s cancellation terms?
Palais AmaniA medina property at Derb El Miter, Oued Zhoune, for a longer heritage stayWhich roadside point should your driver use, and can staff assist with the final walk?
Riad FèsA historic-city property at Derb Ben Slimane, ZerbtanaHow should you reach the property from the Batha side after an evening match?
Hotel SahraiBab Lghoul, Dhar El Mehraz; a hotel alternative outside the medina lanesWhat are the confirmed collection point and return arrangements for your dates?

ibis Fes is worth comparing when rail is central to the trip. Its station location can simplify the arrival sequence, although you still need a separate plan for the stadium and medina. Check bed configuration rather than assuming every room suits a family or a group of friends.

Barceló Fès Medina may suit travellers who want a conventional hotel base and separate medina visits. The name includes “Medina,” but you should assess its actual street location rather than expecting a courtyard riad deep inside Fes el-Bali.

Palais Amani places accommodation and dining in the historic city. For a football visit, ask about luggage assistance, the route from Oued Zhoune and late entry. A room with attractive architecture still needs to meet your requirements for cooling, stairs and sleeping arrangements.

Riad Fès publishes access information identifying parking at Place Batha. Treat that as a starting point for discussion with the property, then confirm the walking route and the location permitted for collection on your matchday. Normal access instructions may be affected by event arrangements.

Hotel Sahrai offers a different setting at Dhar El Mehraz. It can suit visitors who prefer hotel facilities and organised outings into the old city. Do not infer walkable stadium access from being outside the medina; compare the actual road journey.

Questions that affect the whole stay

Ask about a late return before paying. Your booking should make clear whether someone will be available at the property, how the entrance works after hours and what happens if the match runs longer than expected.

For children, check the room’s permitted occupancy, extra-bed arrangements and the final walk from the vehicle. For reduced mobility, ask specifically about steps, lifts, bathroom access and the route to the room. A general accessibility label may not answer every part of the journey.

Compare the total payable amount, deposit, local taxes and cancellation deadline. If you split your stay between a riad and a modern hotel, count the packing, checkout and transfer time. Changing hotels on matchday adds another commitment to a day already shaped by football.

Arriving in Fes by Air or Rail

Fès–Saïss Airport

Fès–Saïss Airport, with airport code FEZ, is the city’s air gateway. Check the airline’s live route and operating dates when you book. A flight available during one season is not a confirmed service for the 2030 tournament.

Give your accommodation both the flight number and the destination meeting point. For a medina riad, establish whether the arrival transfer ends at a gate or roadside location, who helps with luggage and how you reach reception.

A flight landing on matchday leaves several steps before football: immigration, baggage, the transfer, check-in or luggage storage, and the onward trip to the stadium. Prefer an earlier arrival when your itinerary allows it. If arriving the same day is unavoidable, assess the whole sequence and the consequences of a delay.

Fes-Ville railway station

Travelers with luggage arriving at Fes-Ville railway station in Ville Nouvelle, Fes.

Fes-Ville is a useful arrival point for a route involving other Moroccan cities. Search the actual origin and destination in ONCF’s current journey information, including any connection, service type and last departure.

Do not use the phrase “high-speed train to Fes” as a booking assumption. Check the published service rather than carrying a planned railway extension into your travel schedule. A route that uses Al Boraq for one leg can still require another train and a connection before reaching Fes.

Keep the station-to-hotel leg separate from the train journey. For a medina stay, add the vehicle trip to your chosen approach point and the final walk. For a station-area hotel, confirm the route with luggage rather than relying only on a straight-line distance.

Arriving in Casablanca and continuing to Fes can work for an international itinerary, but the airport, city stations and onward train form a chain of separate movements. Check each connection before committing to a fixture later that day.

Planning the Journey from Your Accommodation to the Match

Start from the hotel’s confirmed meeting point. For a riad, this includes leaving the room, navigating the lanes and reaching the vehicle. For a street-address hotel, it includes gathering the group and boarding without blocking other traffic.

The outward journey then includes the drive, permitted drop-off, walk through the event perimeter and entrance checks. A normal map estimate measures only part of that sequence.

Before departure, confirm:

  • The venue and gate shown in the match information.
  • The latest opening time and recommended arrival guidance.
  • The permitted drop-off location and pedestrian approach.
  • A return meeting point with a saved pin and recognisable landmark.
  • How to contact the driver if roads or walking routes change.
  • The arrangement if extra time or another delay changes the exit time.

A prearranged car can organise your collection, but it remains subject to road closures and access rules. No driver can promise entry through a restricted perimeter merely because the journey was booked in advance.

For the late return, plan two meeting points if you stay in the medina: one near the stadium for the vehicle, and one at the city end where the final walk begins. Confirm that your accommodation will be accessible when you arrive.

Our Morocco matchday transport and pickup planning guide explains the wider checks. In Fes, add the riad-to-roadside walking leg to both the outward and return schedule.

Leave a full-day regional excursion off the matchday itinerary. Even a nearby attraction can add queues, meals and detours that make a football departure difficult to control.

Things to Do in Fes Between Matches

A medina walk with a defined finish

fes-el-bali-medina-artisan-walk

Start with a manageable route rather than trying to visit every landmark in one outing. Bab Boujloud, the Bou Inania area, commercial lanes and artisan quarters can introduce the historic city. Choose a finishing point where your group knows how to return to the accommodation.

For religious buildings and madrasas, check visitor access and dress requirements at the site. Al-Qarawiyyin remains a religious place; an itinerary mentioning it should not imply unrestricted entry to its prayer spaces.

You can appreciate tiled surfaces, carved wood and courtyard layouts without making the day a race through entrances. Allow time to sit, eat and find your way between stops, particularly when warm weather makes continuous walking tiring.

Tanneries and artisan areas

Chouara tannery viewpoints offer a view of working leather production. Some viewpoints are accessed through shops. Ask about any charge or purchase expectation before entering, and decide separately whether you want to buy leather goods.

Seffarine is associated with metalworking, while the medina also contains woodwork, ceramics and textile shops. Watch from a position that leaves the workshop entrance clear. Ask before taking close photographs or entering a work area.

Treat a purchase as its own decision. Inspect materials and finish, compare the price and request a receipt for anything substantial. Your sightseeing schedule should allow you to leave without being rushed into a sale.

Fes el-Jdid, the Mellah and palace gates

A separate outing around Fes el-Jdid helps explain the city beyond Fes el-Bali. The Mellah and the exterior of the Royal Palace gates give this walk a different focus from the artisan quarters.

Plan the palace as an exterior visit unless an authorised programme states otherwise. For Jewish heritage sites, confirm the individual opening arrangements and access conditions. A historic district can be visited while a particular building is closed.

Jnan Sbil can provide a garden break between walks when open. Check the current entrance arrangements locally, particularly around events. Combine the garden with a nearby visit rather than crossing the city for an assumed late opening.

Three Restaurants to Consider in Fes

Choose meals around the time you actually have. A restaurant reservation after a regional trip or evening match needs more flexibility than a lunch on a free city day.

Dar Roumana

Dar Roumana’s restaurant describes its cooking as Franco-Moroccan, using local seasonal produce. It is an option for a planned dinner in the medina, with reservations particularly useful for visitors staying elsewhere.

The restaurant offers assistance from a medina gate when arranged at booking. Confirm where you should meet and how the return works. Ask about the current menu, dietary requirements and last ordering time; do not assume a long match will finish early enough for dinner service.

Eden at Palais Amani

Eden offers dining at Palais Amani, with Moroccan dishes and different menu formats. It can fit a medina day when you want a seated meal and a break from walking.

Confirm the reservation, dining space and final access route. Let the restaurant know about allergies or dietary needs before choosing a menu. For a family, ask what is available for children instead of assuming a tasting menu suits everyone.

Gayza at Riad Fès

Gayza provides another medina dining option, with French and Moroccan influences. It needs one check especially relevant to supporters: the restaurant’s published dress policy excludes football jerseys, along with certain other casual items.

Plan to change before dining and reconfirm the current policy. A reservation directly after football may not work if it leaves no time to return to your accommodation. The same practical check applies to bags and the restaurant’s latest service time.

For an unreserved matchday meal, choose a location near your accommodation or confirmed transport meeting point. Eating well before departure can be easier to manage than searching for a restaurant close to a restricted stadium perimeter.

Shopping in Fes and Carrying Purchases Between Cities

Borj Fez for a modern shopping stop

Borj Fez, on Avenue Allal Al Fassi, offers a modern shopping and dining alternative to the medina. It can be useful for a shorter stop or when members of a group want different shops in one location.

Check the current store directory and opening hours for what you need. Mall access does not establish that a particular shop carries football merchandise, a SIM card or your preferred brand. Official tournament merchandise also requires its own authorised sales information.

Medina shopping for crafts

The medina provides a different purpose: leather goods, ceramics, woodwork, textiles and other craft products. The Henna Souk and artisan areas can be part of the visit, but select shops by the product and your requirements rather than a claim that one route contains every worthwhile purchase.

For ceramics, ask how pieces will be wrapped and whether they are suitable for the intended use. For larger goods, get shipping costs, destination charges and delivery terms in writing before paying.

Keep matchday bags light and compliant with the organiser’s rules. Shop on a separate day so purchases can stay at your accommodation rather than travelling to the stadium.

If Fes is one stop in a multi-city route, decide what you can carry before ordering. A large fragile item changes the luggage plan for trains, cars and flights. Include that practical cost in the purchase decision.

Medical Facilities and Everyday Preparation

Two names to keep in your local preparation are CHU Hassan II Fès, the public university hospital centre, and Hôpital International de Fès, a private facility whose operator identifies its location at Lotissement Soluna II on the Route d’Imouzzer, near the Saïs Faculty of Letters.

These are different facilities. Use the exact establishment and entrance when arranging transport. A group’s corporate address or a specialist centre with a similar name should not replace the destination where you have been directed to seek care.

Before travel, save your insurer’s assistance details and check how it handles treatment abroad. For a non-urgent visit, ask the facility about the relevant service, appointment process and payment requirements. A hospital name alone does not confirm direct billing to your insurer.

At the stadium, seek event medical assistance for an urgent problem. Outside it, use the local emergency pathway appropriate to the situation; do not delay urgent help while comparing facilities.

For daily comfort, allow breaks during long walks, carry necessary medication in its original packaging and make room for water and sun protection. Check stadium entry rules for drinks and medical items before arrival. Keep any documentation required for your particular medication available.

Fitness and Recovery During a Fes Stay

If a workout matters to your trip, verify equipment and access before selecting the hotel. A pool, hammam or spa does not automatically include a gym.

Barceló Fès Medina lists a fitness studio with exercise bikes and weight-training equipment. Hotel Sahrai describes a fitness room as part of its health club. Both provide accommodation-based options to investigate for your stay.

Ask about opening hours, guest access, equipment currently available and any additional charge. If you are staying elsewhere, obtain confirmation of non-resident admission; do not assume either hotel sells a day pass.

Keep a workout away from the stadium departure window. A short session followed by breakfast can fit a free morning, while a long medina walk already adds time on your feet. After a late match, a slower city day may suit the group better than an early regional departure.

For a hammam or spa appointment, check the treatment duration and cancellation conditions. Book around the confirmed football schedule rather than leaving two fixed commitments competing for the same afternoon.

Fes Itineraries for Three to Five Days

These outlines use a matchday as a movable part of the stay. Reorder them around the published fixture and the time needed to arrive at the stadium.

Three days for one match and a city introduction

DaySuggested plan
Day 1Arrive, settle in and learn the accommodation’s vehicle meeting point. Take a short neighbourhood walk and eat nearby.
Day 2Keep sightseeing brief. Eat, prepare your ticket and belongings, then follow the confirmed stadium journey and return arrangement.
Day 3Visit a manageable medina route if departure permits, or leave the city with enough time for the station or airport.

This works as an introduction, with limited sightseeing if both arrival and departure are constrained. A morning flight on day three leaves little room for a medina visit, so adjust expectations before booking.

Four days with a full medina day

Add a separate day for Fes el-Bali before the match: architecture and artisan areas in the morning, a seated lunch, and a shorter afternoon. Keep purchases at your accommodation and confirm the football transport that evening.

Use the final day for Fes el-Jdid, the palace exterior or a garden stop if your departure schedule allows. Staying in the same accommodation avoids moving luggage during the football visit.

Five days with a regional excursion

DaySuggested plan
Day 1Arrival, check-in and a short local walk
Day 2Fes el-Bali, selected landmarks and a planned meal
Day 3Football day with its own transport and return schedule
Day 4One regional outing, chosen after considering recovery and the next departure
Day 5A shorter city visit, shopping or onward travel

Move the excursion if the match falls on a different day. When attending two fixtures, use the gap between them to decide whether leaving Fes is practical. Avoid treating a day without a ticket as automatically available for a long road trip.

Regional Trips from Fes Before or After Football

Meknes and Volubilis offer an imperial-city and Roman-history combination. Adding Moulay Idriss introduces another stop, so agree on the complete route, walking requirements and return time before departure. The time to Meknes alone does not describe a multi-stop excursion.

Ifrane and the Azrou area provide a Middle Atlas alternative. Choose the stops according to weather, walking preferences and the group’s energy. Wildlife should remain undisturbed; do not plan the outing around feeding animals or a promised sighting.

Sefrou and Bhalil can offer a different town-based visit. Confirm access to individual sites and any private homes or workshops rather than assuming every place mentioned in an itinerary accepts casual visitors.

Chefchaouen deserves a separate route decision. Compare an overnight with a return excursion, including the total driving and the time left to explore. A late return before a football morning or onward flight can make the combination less useful.

Merzouga and the Sahara require a multi-day plan from Fes. Count the outward journey, camp stay and onward destination together. A short gap between fixtures should not be filled with a desert itinerary that leaves little room for delay or rest.

For Taza and the Friouato cave area, verify current access, guide requirements and conditions before committing. An advertised regional trip is not proof that a particular cave route is open on your date.

Budgeting for a Fes Football Visit

Build the budget from bookings you can actually compare. Separate the match ticket from accommodation, airport or station transfers, stadium transport, meals, sightseeing and regional excursions.

A riad’s room rate may need to be considered alongside porter assistance and vehicle collection at a gate. A modern hotel may change how much you spend on journeys into the historic city. Compare the total stay rather than one night’s price.

For transport quotes, specify the number of travellers, luggage, origin, venue and return arrangements. Ask what happens if the match runs longer or the authorised collection point changes. The price of one ordinary city journey does not establish the cost of a matchday round trip with waiting.

Leave space for incidental spending and itinerary changes, without assigning an invented 2030 percentage increase. Present hotel rates, meal prices and train fares are not tournament quotes. Keep a record of what is refundable and the deadline for each booking.

Questions About World Cup 2030 Fes Travel

Which stadium should I search for in Fes?

Search for Complexe Sportif de Fès, Fes Stadium or Grand Stade de Fès, then confirm the name and entrance in the organiser’s match information. Do not substitute Stade Hassan II because it also appears in local football searches.

Is a riad or a Ville Nouvelle hotel more suitable?

A riad can suit a stay focused on medina visits. A Ville Nouvelle or station-area hotel may simplify collection and rail departures. Compare late entry, the final walk, room access and the full stadium journey before deciding.

Can I walk from the medina to the stadium?

Treat the stadium as a separate journey from the medina. Plan transport to an authorised drop-off point and the pedestrian approach required for your entrance, rather than assuming a sightseeing walk connects directly to the ground.

Can I arrive in Fes on the day of the match?

It depends on the arrival, fixture and contingency plan. Include baggage, hotel access, the stadium journey and entry checks. Arriving the previous day gives you more time to settle in and resolve local arrangements.

Can I buy a World Cup ticket through my hotel?

Follow the authorised sales information for the tournament and the specific match. A hotel reservation does not establish ticket access. Our football tickets in Morocco guide explains the purchase checks to make before paying.

Can I wear a football jersey to a restaurant?

Check the restaurant’s policy. Gayza at Riad Fès currently publishes a restriction on football jerseys, so plan a change of clothing if dining there and reconfirm before your visit.

How many days should I allow in Fes?

Three days can cover an arrival, one match and a short city introduction. Four or five give more room for a full medina day and, when the schedule permits, a regional outing. Count usable hours as well as nights.

Exploring Fes with Visit Morocco Together

Visit Morocco Together’s Fes Medina Walking Tour is a specific option for a day away from football. The published experience combines a local guide, artisan areas, souks and a traditional lunch, giving visitors time to understand the historic city rather than fit it into a brief stadium-day outing. Place it on a free day and confirm the starting time, walking pace, meeting point and planned finish before reserving. For a riad stay, explain where a vehicle can reach you and whether you need help with the final pedestrian route. Share your confirmed match date, group size, accommodation and onward destination so the city visit can be assessed against the rest of your journey. Discuss the guide language, dietary needs and any walking limitations when requesting availability. The published inclusions cover entrance fees and hotel pickup, while personal purchases, tips and drinks are listed separately. Confirm how those terms apply to your selected date and accommodation, particularly when pickup requires meeting outside the medina lanes. If you also want a regional extension, ask for the exact service and route to be checked against the gap between fixtures, including where the trip finishes. Keep the tour booking and football arrangements clear: the walking experience covers a city visit, while World Cup admission and stadium access remain subject to the organiser’s ticket and matchday information.
